Being an international graduate student, I think if we can smoothen the first
impression of the international graduate students for Pittsburgh and University of
Pittsburgh, then it would be really helpful. I would suggest that department of SCI can
schedule pickup buses along with a representative to pick-up the international
students from airport when they arrive first time to Pittsburgh from their respective
home countries. Forms can be shared with prospective students to collect relevant
data and then buses can be scheduled for days where majority of students are arriving.
2. Recent graduated students of SCI can be invited for a webinar/podcast for current
students where invited speakers can share insights about various aspects like how to
handle coursework, internship search, life after internship/job, how to carry oneself in
professional world. If recent graduate students approve of this, we can start a
mentorship program where these recent graduates can mentor new graduate students.
3. Along with social hour, we can arrange different games that foster team work and
interaction between newly joined students and current graduate students.
